One of the greatest leadership challenges is knowing how to best motivate those around you when they are not meeting expectations. Some respond well to challenges, others to encouragement/empathy, and then occasionally a leader has to disconnect and allow him/her to get broken to the point that leadership will be received. I find the last the hardest to do, not because of the pious attempt at never giving up on someone, but rather I am too stubborn to see that is potentially what is needed.
