Remembering the Future-Leadership Gem

While reading American Soldier by General Tommy Franks I was shown a valuable leadership principle. In his autobiography, General Franks does a wonderful job of graphically recalling every major battle from Vietnam through Iraqi Freedom from the view of his eyewitness.  On the day leading up to the Iraqi Invasion General Franks takes time to ground himself by recalling significant life experiences from childhood through each war.  He found this valuable as it gave him a sense of success and reminded him of what it is like to be a soldier on the ground.  As senior level leaders we should learn from General Franks so that we dont become elitists.  Secret to effective leadership..."Fly at 20,000 ft and still smell like the sheep".
